The match of the century

The match of the century
"When the Magical Magyars illuminated Wembley"
Exhibition and commemoration on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the legendary international football match between Hungary and England when the Golden Team of Hungary defeated England with a 6:3 win.

Hungary - then the world's number one ranked team, the Olympic champions and on a run of 24 unbeaten games. England were unbeaten in 90 years on home soil against European opposition. For England, there were players such as Billy Wright and Stanley Matthews, while Hungary fielded a talented lineup led by captain Ferenc Puskás, Sándor Kocsis, and Nandor Hidegkuti. By November of 1953, there was huge interest in the Wembley game across the continent. The view was largely held that these were the two best teams in world football and it was dubbed the 'Match of the Century' by the press. Hungary's 6-3 destruction of Walter Winterbottom's team was not only a defining moment in English football history but arguably the moment the baton passed from one sporting age to another. At the exhibition-beyond the selected photos, graphics, documents, all in connection with the "Match of the century" and The Hungarian Golden Team, the reactions, feedbacks to the match also play an important role.
